I think while writing this book this is how I felt, like I was in that fearful time-out corner getting whaled on by society at large. Ever been at the place where you needed help, or comfort so bad, and it felt like everyone around you laughed and stared sensing the obvious defeat, well sometimes it can be that way sometimes. But like Grandma used to say, when in doubt, write it down. Thats what I did.

Yeah, it’s true. And that number is increasing every year. I don’t think clown school is for everybody, but I definitely had a good time. It was a great experience for me. And it wasn’t just parties and clowning around all the time either. I actually did some serious studying. I graduated magna cum laude.

CUT TO:

Clown performs some dreadful juggling. Lemons bounce from one hand to the other in a way that doesn’t even remotely resemble coordination.

BACK TO SCENE

CLOWN
Well, maybe not magna cum laude, but certainly in the top…
(slowly figures
out the math)

(brightens up)
I did have perfect attendance.


EXT. PARK – DAY

CLOWN
Some people don’t think that graduating from clown school is a very big achievement, but clearly, they’ve never been to clown school. Cause, it’s tough, you know. It can be a test of wills. You need to put in a lot of hard work and dedication.
CUT TO:

Clown is slumped in a chair. He stares toward the ground, deep in thought. We pan down to reveal clown playing with belly button.


EXT. PARK – DAY

CLOWN
A lot of people laugh when I tell them I’ve been through clown school, and not in a good way, you know. Not like I was trying to make them laugh. They’re laughing because they don’t think clown school is a serious thing. But if you think about, like really think about it… that’s like saying it’s not a serious thing for a doctor to go through… doctor school. So, if you think about it, we’re the same as doctors really.
(pause)
I just, I don’t know why we don’t get the same level of respect.

CUT TO:

Clown blows up a balloon. A HECKLER lobs a water bottle and hits the clown. The balloon sputters out of the clown’s mouth and flails to the ground. The heckler runs off.

CLOWN
Oh! Son of a bitch!
(runs after heckler)
I’m going to kick your ass!


EXT. PARK – DAY

A PHONE RINGS:

CLOWN
Oh, hold on a second.
(looks at phone)
It’s my agent, I have to take this. Hey, Stew! Yeah I’m doing good. Are we still on for the Peterson kid’s party? Yeah.
(MORE)

CLOWN (CONT’D)
(face slowly droops)
Oh… Okay. No, I understand… No, that’s okay… Yeah. But, you know, if there are any other jobs available, maybe… hello? Stew?


EXT. PARK – DAY

CLOWN
They gave the job to Sunny, the birthday clown. Apparently, she has more experience with kids and birthday parties or some crap, I don’t know… Pfft. Yeah, she’s more experienced alright. You know what I heard? I heard that she slept with the entire clown school football team. Yeah. And a buddy of mine said that she’s been slumming around with mimes. Mimes! They’re not even real clowns for Christ sake!
(stops to get a breath)
I’m sorry. I’m not trying to--I don’t want to sound like--whatever. That’s just what I heard.


EXT. PARK – DAY

CLOWN
No, I’m not upset. I’ll be okay.

CUT TO:

Clown screams and stomps on the ground, popping balloon animal after balloon animal. After repeated tries, one balloon still doesn’t pop. The clown gets even more frustrated and kicks it. Chases after it. Picks it up. And twists the neck until the head explodes.


EXT. PARK – DAY

CLOWN
No, but being a clown is a good job. It’s a tough job. But it can be very rewarding.
(MORE)
CLOWN (CONT’D)
When you can make kids laugh, even if it’s just one kid.
(smile gets bigger)
And you see that huge smile across his face… it’s just the most amazing feeling. It’s like, yes! I made that kid light up. I did that. I did that.
